"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 8 Jesus at Tabernacles (Jn 7.1- 8.59)8.6 Further Teaching and Reaction: Jesus' Departure (Jn 8.21-9)21Then he said to them again, “I am going and you will look for me, and you will die in your sins. You cannot go where I am going.” 22Then the Judaeans (or the Jerusalemites) said, “He's not going to kill himself, is he? Is that why he said "You cannot go where I am going"?” 23And he said to them, “You are part of what's below, I am part of what's above: you are part of this world, I myself am not of this world. 24Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins, for if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” 25So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “I am what I've told you from the beginning. 26I have much to say and to judge about you but the one who sent me is true and I speak to the world what I heard from him.” 27(They didn't know that he was speaking of his Father to them.) 28Then Jesus said [to them], “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM. And I do nothing on my own but I say this as the Father who sent me taught me. 29And the one who sent me is with me; he does not leave me alone, so that I always do what is pleasing to him.” Return to the opening menu. |
