"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 8 Jesus at Tabernacles (Jn 7.1- 8.59)8.1 Before the Feast: Conflict with Jesus' Brothers (Jn 7.1-13)71And after this Jesus went about in Galilee, for he did not want to go about in Judaea because the Judaeans sought to kill him. 2Now the Jewish festival of Tabernacles was near; 3therefore his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judaea so that your disciples will see the works that you do. 4For no-one acts in secret and still tries to be frequently talked about. If you do these things, make yourself known to the world!” 5(For not even his brothers had trust in him.) 6So Jesus said to them, “The right time for me isn't here yet. For you, though, the right time is always at hand. 7The world cannot hate you but it does hate me, because I bear witness to the world1 that its works are wicked. 8You go up to the festival; I am not going up to this festival because the right time for me is not yet fulfilled.” 9Saying this then, he remained in Galilee. 10When his brothers went up to the festival then he also went up, not openly but [as though] in secret. 11Then the Judaeans (or "the authorities") sought him during the festival and they said, “Where is that fellow?” 12There was also a lot of murmuring about him among the crowds. Some said that he was a good man; others said, “No -- rather he misleads the crowd.” 13Nevertheless no-one spoke openly about him, on account of their fear of "the authorities".
