"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 1Section 1: The Prologue (Jn 1.1-18)
11In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was near1 God and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning near2 God. 3All things came into being through3 him and without him not one thing came into being. What came into being 4in him was life and this life was the light of human beings. 5And the light is shining in the dark and the dark did not lay hold of it. 6There was4 a person sent from God whose name was John. 7He came so as to bear witness, to bear witness about the light, so that all might believe because of him. 8He was not that light, but was to bear witness about the light. 9The true light that enlightens every person was coming into the world -- 10he was in the world and the world came into being through5 him and the world did not know him. 11He came to his own place and his own people did not receive him. 12But as many as did receive him, to them he gave the ability6 to become children of God, to those that put their trust in his name, 13those begotten not of blood7 nor by the will of the flesh nor by the will of a man, but from God. 14And the Word became flesh and made a tabernacle among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the Father's only son, full of steadfast love -- 15John bears witness about him and cried out saying, 'He was the one of whom I said, "The one coming after me was ahead of me, because he was in existence before me."' -- 16for we all have received from his fullness, grace indeed instead of grace, 17because the Law was given through Moses and steadfast love was from Jesus Christ. 18No-one has ever seen God. God the only Son, who is at the Father's side: he is the one to describe Him.
