"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 1

Section 1: The Prologue (Jn 1.1-18)

1¹In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was near¹ God and the Word was God. ²He was in the beginning near² God. ³All things came into being through³ him and without him not one thing came into being. What came into being ⁴in him was life and this life was the light of human beings. ⁵And the light is shining in the dark and the dark did not lay hold of it.

⁶There was⁴ a person sent from God whose name was John. ⁷He came so as to bear witness, to bear witness about the light, so that all might believe because of him. ⁸He was not that light, but was to bear witness about the light. ⁹The true light that enlightens every person was coming into the world -- ¹⁰he was in the world and the world came into being through⁵ him and the world did not know him. ¹¹He came to his own place and his own people did not receive him. ¹²But as many as did receive him, to them he gave the ability⁶ to become children of God, to those that put their trust in his name, ¹³those begotten not of blood⁷ nor by the will of the flesh nor by the will of a man, but from God.

¹⁴And the Word became flesh and made a tabernacle among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the Father's only son, full of steadfast love -- ¹⁵John bears witness about him and cried out saying, 'He was the one of whom I said, "The one coming after me was ahead of me, because he was in existence before me."' -- ¹⁶for we all have received from his fullness, grace indeed instead of grace, ¹⁷because the Law was given through Moses and steadfast love was from Jesus Christ. ¹⁸No-one has ever seen God. God the only Son, who is at the Father's side: he is the one to describe Him.
