"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 14.1 Jesus' Resurrection (Jn 20.1-18)201On the first day of the week Mary Magdalen came to the tomb in the early morning while it was still dark and saw the stone that had been moved away from the tomb. 2Then she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and she said to them, 'They have taken the Lord from the tomb and we do not know where they have laid him!' 3Then Peter and the other disciple went out and they went to the tomb. 4So the two of them ran there and the other disciple ran ahead, more quickly than Peter, and came to the tomb first. 5And leaning forward and peering in, he saw the linen cloths lying; however, he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter also came, following him, and he went into the tomb, and he saw the linen cloths lying, 7and the towel, which had been around his head, was not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up apart in its own place. 8After that the other disciple, the one who came to the tomb first, went in too and when he had seen this, he also believed Mary Magdalen1. 9For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples went away home again. 11But Mary stood at the tomb, weeping outside. As she wept, she leaned forward and peered into the tomb. 12And she saw two angels in shining white, sitting one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They took my lord away, and I don't know where they have put him." 14After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; and she did not realise that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" She, thinking that he was the gardener, said to him, "Sir, if you removed him, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away!" 16Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She, turning, said to him in Aramaic2, "Rabbouni!", which means "teacher". 17Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet gone up to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am going up to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" 18Mary Magdalen went, announcing to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and what he said to her.
