"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 9 Deepening Conflict (Jn 9.1- 10.42)
Section 9.3 Jesus at the Feast of Dedication (Jn 10.22-39)
22At that time, it being winter, the feast
of Dedication took place in Jerusalem, 23and Jesus walked in the Temple, in
Solomon's Portico. 24The Judaeans (or
The Jerusalemites) stood about him and said to him, How long will you keep us hanging? If in
fact you are the Messiah, tell us plainly! 25Jesus answered them, I told
you and you don't trust in me.
The works I do in my Father's name -- they bear witness about me. 26But
you don't trust in them
because you are not among my sheep. 27My sheep hear my
voice and I know them and they follow me. 28And I give them everlasting life and they will never die at all
and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29What my Father has given me is greater than everything else
and no-one can snatch it from my Father's hand. 30I and the Father are one.
31The Judaeans (or
The Jerusalemites) again picked up
stones for stoning him. 32Jesus answered them, I showed you many fine works from the Father;
what kind of work among them are you going to stone me for? 33The Judaeans (or
The Jerusalemites) answered him,
We aren't going to stone you over a "fine work" but over blasphemy and because you, a mere human being,
are making yourself God! 34Jesus answered them, Isn't it written in your
own law, “I said, "You are gods"?”
35If it says that those to whom the word of God came are gods -- and the Scripture cannot be annulled -- 36are
you saying about the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world,
You are blaspheming! because I said, I am the son of God ? 37If I don't do my Father's works, then don't trust me;
38but if I do them and you don't trust me, trust the works, so that you may
know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father. 39They [then] tried
again to arrest him but he slipped out of their hands.
