"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 9 Deepening Conflict (Jn 9.1- 10.42)
9.2 Shepherds and Sheepfolds (Jn 10.1-21)
101“Amen, Amen, I say to you, the one who does not enter the sheepfold by the gates but climbs in another way -- that one is a thief and a robber. 2But the one that goes in through the gates is a shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens to him and the sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4Whenever he takes out all his own, he goes in front of them and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5They won't follow a stranger, but run away from him, because they don't know the voice of strangers.” 6Jesus used this proverbial way of speaking to them, but they didn't understand what he was saying to them.
7Then Jesus spoke again, “Amen, amen I say to you that I am the gate for the sheep. 8All that came [before me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep don't listen to them. 9I am the gate; whoever enters by me will be kept safe and will go in and out and find pasture. 10The thief does not come except to steal and slay and destroy. I came so that they might have life, and have it in abundance.
11“I am the real shepherd1. The real shepherd gives up his life for the sheep. 12The hired man, not being a shepherd, to whom the sheep don't belong, sees the wolf coming and neglects the sheep and flees -- and the wolf snatches them up and scatters them -- 13because he is a hired man and doesn't care for the sheep.
14“I am the real shepherd and I know my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father, and I give up my life for the sheep. 16And I have other sheep that aren't from this sheepfold; I ought to lead them too and they will hear my voice and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
17“For this reason the Father loves me, because I give up my life so as to take it up again. 18No-one takes it away from me, but I give it up of my own accord: I have the power to give it up and I have the power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”
19Again there was division among the Judaeans (or the Jerusalemites) about these words. 20Many of them said, “He is possessed by an evil spirit and is mad: why do you listen to him?” 21Others said, “These are not the words of someone with an evil spirit! An evil spirit can not open the eyes of the blind.”
