"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 8 Jesus at Tabernacles (Jn 7.1- 8.59)

8.5 Further Teaching and Reaction: The Light of the World (Jn 8.12-20)

12Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying “I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will not walk in the darkness at all. Instead they will have the light of life.” 13Then the Pharisees said to him, “You bear witness about yourself: your witness is not true.” 14Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I do bear witness to myself, my witness is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I am coming from or where I am going. 15You judge according to the flesh, I do not judge anyone. 16And if I do judge, my judgement is true, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father that sent me. 17And in your Law it is written that the witness of two persons is true. 18I am bearing witness about myself and the Father that sent me is bearing witness about me.” 19Then they said to him “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You don't know either me or my Father: if you don't know me, you don't know my Father either.” 20He said these sayings in the treasury while he was teaching in the Temple, and no one took him because his hour had not yet come.
