"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 8 Jesus at Tabernacles (Jn 7.1- 8.59)
53And they went away, each one to their own home, 81but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2Then in the early morning he came again to the Temple. And all the people came to him and when he had sat down, he taught them. 3Then the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who had been detected in adultery. And when they had made her stand in front of everyone1, 4they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act when she committed adultery. 5Now in the Law Moses ordered us to stone such women. What then do you say?” 6They said this to test him, so that they would be able to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7When they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the sinless among you throw a stone at her first”, 8and he stooped down again and wrote on the ground. 9But his hearers began going away one by one, beginning with the elders. And he was left alone with the woman before him2. 10Then when Jesus straightened up, he said to the woman, “Where are they? Does no-one condemn you?” 11Then she said, “No-one, sir.” So Jesus said to her, “Nor do I condemn you. Go [and] from now on, sin no more.”
