"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 4 Jesus in Samaria: the Living Water
Section 4.3: The Disciples Return and the Woman Leaves (Jn 4.27-38)
27And at that his disciples came and they wondered that he was speaking with a woman, yet no-one said, 'What are you after?' or 'Why did you speak with her?' 28So the woman left her water jar and went away into the city and spoke to the people, 29'Come, see a person who told me everything I had done! Surely he's not the Christ, is he?' 30They went out of the city and started toward him.
31In the meantime the disciples kept asking him, saying 'Rabbi, have something to eat.' 32But he said to them, 'I have food to eat that you don't know about.' 33So the disciples said to one another, 'Nobody brought him something to eat, did they?' 34Jesus said to them, 'My food is to do the will of the one that sent me and to accomplish his work. 35Don't you have a saying, "Four months more, and the harvest will be here"? Look, I am telling you: lift your eyes and see that the fields are white for the harvest! Already 36the reaper is getting his pay and gathering fruit for everlasting life; as a result the sower rejoices along with the reaper. 37Depend on it, the saying is true that one man sows and another man reaps: 38I sent you to harvest what you have not laboured for. Others laboured and you received the fruit of their labour.'
