"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 2 Witness and Call

Section 2.2: John's Disciples Turn to Jesus (Jn 1.35-42)

35The next day again John and two of his disciples were standing by and, 36looking at Jesus walking along, he said 'Behold! The Lamb of God.' 37And his two disciples heard him talking and they followed Jesus. 38Then Jesus, turning about and seeing them following, said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ Then they said to him, ‘Rabbi (that is to say, in translation, ‘Teacher’), where are you staying?’ 39He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed at his home that day. It was about the tenth hour. 40Andrew the brother of Simon Peter was one of the two that heard what John said and followed Jesus1. 41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah (which in translation is ‘the Anointed’).’ 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus, looking at him, said, ‘You are Simon son of John; you shall be called Kephas (which is translated ‘Peter’2).’
