"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 13 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses

13.2 Questioning before Annas and Caiaphas (Jn 18.13-27)

13And they led him to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. (14Further Caiaphas was the one who advised 'the authorities' that it was more expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.)

15Then Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Now that disciple was known to the high priest and entered the high priest's courtyard with Jesus. 16But Peter stood outside near the door. Then the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, came out and spoke to the woman who was keeping the door, and brought Peter in. 17Then the slave woman who was keeping the door said to Peter, "Aren't you also one of this fellow's disciples?" That man (ie, Peter) said, "I am not." 18But the slaves and the Temple attendants made a charcoal fire because it was cold and stood about and were warming themselves. Now Peter also was standing with them and warming himself.

19Then the high priest asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in a synagogue or in the Temple where all Jews meet together and I said nothing in secret. 21Why do you ask me? Ask my hearers what I said to them - look, they know what I said!"22When he had said these things, one of the Temple attendants standing by slapped Jesus, saying "Do you answer the high priest like this!" 23Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken well, why strike me?" 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

25But while Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, then someone said to him, "Weren't you also one of his disciples?". That man (ie Peter) denied it and said, "I am not." 26One of the high priest's slaves said - he was a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off - "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?" 27Again Peter denied it and at once the cock crowed.
