"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 12 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses

12.3 Jesus' Final Prayer for His Disciples (Jn 17.1-25)

171 Jesus said this and, raising his eyes toward heaven, he said, 'Father, the hour has arrived! Glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you -- 2just as you have given him power1 over all flesh, so that he may give eternal life to them, to each one that you have given him.' (3This then is eternal life, that they know you, the only real2 God, and Messiah Jesus3 whom you have sent.) 4'I have glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work which you gave me to do. 5And now, Father, glorify me yourself in your own presence4 with the glory that I had in your presence5 before the world was.

6'I made your name known to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours and you have given them to me and they have kept your word. 7Now they have understood that everything that you have given me was from you. 8For I have given them the words that you gave me: they received them indeed and they understood truly that I came forth from you and they trusted that you sent me.

9'I am asking you on their behalf -- I am not asking for the world but for those whom you have given to me, because they are yours -- 10indeed all that is mine is yours, and what is yours is mine -- and I have been glorified in them. 11And I am no longer in the world -- but they are in the world while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe in your name, which you have given to me, so that they may be one, just as we are one. 12While I was with them, I kept them safe in your name, which you have given to me, and I guarded them and none of them was lost -- except the son of perdition, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13But now I am coming to you, and I say these things while in the world so that they may possess my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14But I have given them your word and the world hated them because they are not from the world, just as I am not from the world. 15I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the Evil One. 16They are not from the world, just as I am not from the world. 17Consecrate them in the truth -- your word is the truth. 18Just as you sent me into the world, I also sent them into the world. 19And for their sake I am consecrating myself, so that they too may be consecrated in truth.

20I am not asking only for them, but also for those who put their trust in me because of their word: 21 may they all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, so that the world might believe that you sent me. 22And I have given them the glory that you have given to me, that they may be one just as we are one -- 23I in them and you in me, so that they might be perfected as one, so that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them just as you love me.

24Father, as for what you have given me - I wish that they also may be with me where I am, so that they may see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world! 25Righteous Father, the world also did not know you, but I knew you and these know that you sent me. 26And I made your name known to them and I will make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I may be in them.
