"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 12 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses

12.2 Table Talk: 12.2.8 Preparing for Departure, and Arrival (Jn 16.1-11)

161 I've told you this so that you won't stumble - 2they are going to put you out of the synagogue, and the hour is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God! 3And they will do this because they do not know my Father or me. 4But I have said this to you so that when the hour comes, you will remember it - remember that I spoke to you about it.

I did not say this to you from the beginning because I was with you. 5Yet now I am going to the One who sent me, and none of you asks me, "Where are you going?" 6But because I have told you this, sorrow has filled your heart. 7But I am telling you the truth: it is a good thing for you that I am going. For if I don't go, the Advocate1 won't come to you. But if I do go, I will send them2 to you.

8And when that one comes, they will expose the world's guilt about misdoing and about righteousness and about judgement: 9about misdoing, because it3 does not put its trust in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you see me no longer; 11about judgement, because the ruler of this world is being judged.
