"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 12 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses

.2 Table Talk (Jn 13.21-16.33): 12.2.4 The Advocate (Jn 14.15-31)

'If you love me, you will keep my commandments.16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate1, to be with you always, 17the Spirit of truth, whom the world can't receive because it doesn't see or know them2. You know them because they remain with you and are in you. 18I will not leave you orphans -- I am coming to you. 19Indeed in a short time the world will see me no longer but you will see me, because I am living and you yourselves will live. 20On that day, you will know that I am in my Father and you are in me and I myself am in you. 21The one who holds on to my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. Indeed the one who loves me will be loved by my Father and I myself will love them and reveal myself to them.'

Judas - not Iscariot -- said to him, 'What has happened that you intend to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?' 23Jesus answered and said to him, 'If someone loves me, they will keep my word, and my Father will love them and we will come to them and make our dwelling with them. 24The one who does not love me does not keep my words; the word that you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.

'I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you, 26but the Advocate3, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything that I said to you.

'I leave peace behind for you: I give you my peace. I don't give it to you as the world gives it. Don't be agitated at heart and don't be afraid! 28You heard me say to you, "I am going, and will come to you". If you loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I . 29Now indeed I have told you this before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may put your trust in me4. 30I no longer have much to say to you, for the ruler of the world is coming. Indeed he has no hold on me. 31I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up! Let's go away from here.'
