"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 12 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses

12.2 Table Talk (Jn 13.21-16.33): 12.2.3 Many Mansions, One Way (Jn 14.1-14)

141'Don't be agitated at heart! Trust in God; trust also in me. 2There are many places to stay in my Father's house. If not, would I say to you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, then1 I am coming again and I shall take you to myself, so that where I am, you will be too. 4And you know the way that I am going.'

5Thomas said to him, 'Sir, we don't know where you are going, how can we know the way?' 6Jesus said to him, 'I am the way; indeed I am the true life (or the living truth)! Unless they come through me, no-one comes to the Father. 7If you knew me, you would also also come to know my Father. Indeed now you do know him and have seen him.'

8Philip said to him, 'Sir, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.' 9Jesus said to him, 'Philip, here I am with you for such a long time, and you don't know me? The one who sees me has seen the Father. So how can you say, "Show us the Father"? 10Don't you trust that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? I do not say the words I am speaking to you on my own account, but the Father who remains in me does his works. 11Trust in me, that I am in the Father and the Father in me; if not, trust on account of the deeds themselves.

12'Amen, Amen, I say to you, the one who trusts in me will do the works that I do, and greater than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.'
