"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 12 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses

12.2 Table Talk: 12.2.11 Speaking in Figures (Jn 16.25-33)

25'I have said these things to you in figurative1 sayings; the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative2 sayings, but I will openly tell you about the Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name. Indeed I am not saying to you that I will ask the Father for you, 27for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have trusted that I come from God. 28I came from the Father and I came into the world; I am going from the world again and I am going to the Father.'

29His disciples said, 'Look, now you have spoken openly! Indeed you are not saying anything figurative3. 30Now we know that you know all things and have no need for anyone to ask you - for this reason we trust that you came from the Father.' 31Jesus answered them, 'Do you now trust? 32Look, the hour is coming and has come that you will be scattered, each one to their own place, and you will leave me all alone. Indeed I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33I have said these things to you so that you may have peace in me. You have distress in the world but take courage! I have overcome the world.'
