"Come and See": A Web Commentary on the Gospel of John: Section 12 The Last Supper and Farewell Discourses
12.2 Table Talk: 12.2.10 Sorrow to Joy (Jn 16.16-24)
16'A short time and you will not see me any longer, and a short time again and you will see me.' 17Then some among the disciples said to one another, 'What is this that he is saying to us: "A short time and you will not see me and a short time again and you will see me" and "I am going away to the Father"‽ 18Then they said, 'What is this "short time"? We don't understand what he has said!'
19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him questions, and he said to them, 'Are you asking one another about this - that I said, "A short time and you do not see me, and a short time again and you will see me"? 20Amen, Amen I say to you that you will cry and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sad, but your sadness will be turned to joy. 21When a woman gives birth, she experiences grief, because her hour has come. Yet when she has given birth to her child, she doesn't remember her distress any longer, because of her joy that a person has been born into the world. 22And so you now experience sadness, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice and no-one will take your joy from you.
23'And in that day you will not ask me anything. Amen, Amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give you. 24Till now you have not asked for anything in my name -- ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.'
